Bill creates service requirement in students’ memory

While I think mentoring is a great idea, I don’t think that EVERY college student is capable of or a good candidate for mentoring an at-risk child. Programs like these should be voluntary or you lose the quality. If you force someone to mentor someone who feels they do not have the ability to do so, they aren’t going to do a good job, so what have you gained?

  1. More government sponsored indentured servitude. A community service requirement is also becoming popular for high school diplomas. There is already PLENTY of opportunity for wide eyed college kids that want to make a difference in the world to attempt to do so through community service frats and sororities. Anytime you mandate something that was previously volunteer, suddenly the quality of service plummets. Really, think about the average college kid, do we really want them to be teaching children. I can just imagine what I would have taught a school-age kid while I was in college, I would have focused on the important real life stuff. How to roll a joint, how to get alcohol when you are underage, how the best way to cure a hangover after a night of binge drinking is to drink a shitload of water and let the latent alcohol in you system get you drunk again, how to build your own bong, real important things little kids need to know.
